Dartington and Totnes

Our studio is based on the Dartington Hall Estate, an aggressively beautiful location, with a powerful history of radicalism in the Arts. We look out over trees, birds, a green valley and stark modernist buildings. Dartington is a dispersed village in Devon in the South West of England. A few miles to the north is Dartmoor National Park, a few miles to the south is the sea.

We launched the station for Dartington College of Arts, in the same week that the news broke that the college was to leave the area.

The station is supported by the Dartington Hall Trust, who provide our studio space free of charge.

Many of our presenters live in nearby Totnes, and walk or cycle to the studio along the River Dart footpath. Totnes is known for its creative and alternative culture, with pubs where you can see live music and poets almost any evening. The town has a wide range of independent shops and small businesses, and is home of the Transition movement. More than 8000 people tune in locally to 102.5FM and many more fans across the world listen to specialist Soundart Radio programmes online.

Broadcasts are frequently interrupted by the sound of the steam train, and occasionally by small animals, such as robins, bats and spiders.
