We celebrate Imbolc, or Candlemas, with First Spark - a festival of radio art. On the mid point between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox, the first sparks of light return, and the earliest signs of spring are noticed, with small shoots pushing up through the soil. 'Imbolc' refers to ewe's milk - it's still a while 'til the lambs will be born, but our thoughts and bodies are turning that way. Candlemas (and not twelfth night) was the time to take down the Christmas decorations.
For the First Spark festival we accept - and welcome - submissions of radio art pieces on the themes of rebirth, new ideas, first sparks of electricity, light and sound. These may be unformed, experimental, short pieces that you might realise in full later in the year. We also hold an annual, artist led discussion, and live performances.
